On November 20, I rode out to LSU Lakes hoping to spot more of the pelicans. Their migration became a
news item as it slowed traffic on I-10, drivers gawking at the sheer numbers. This day, they were somewhere else, but I happened upon a congregation* of snowy egrets. I got a few random shots, but not what I wanted, so I packed it in to continue the pelican search elsewhere. As I drove away, a snowy was intently watching the water, so I pulled over on the shoulder as far as possible, put the emergency flashers on, climbed in the passenger seat, and rested the lens on the window ledge of the car door. Something told me I was about to see this one in action.

Boom! It happened so fast! This was taken four shots after the one above. |
|
I thought he'd scarf the fish down right away, but he climbed higher on the log and turned around as if
to show all the other egrets his prize. |

Burp! |
*Collective nouns for egrets are: congregation; heronry; RSVP; skewer; wedge. I find the names for groups of birds interesting.

Gail, gorgeous images of the Snowy Egret! They are beautiful! Have a happy week!
WOW when I read your title Gail I thought you would be eating snow and wondered how you found snow where you live.:) I LOVE these shots. Hug B
Amazing captures! What a beautiful bird!
These are some fantastic captures!!
daar was je precies op tijd bij,wat is dit mooi.
What an incredible series of photos!! They are just so sharp and clear! (a problem I am dealing with currently with my sport shots....)
You caught the action well! A fabulous series Gail!
RSVP? wow! funky!
LOVE your shots of this gorgeous bird!!!
A remarkable sequence of shots documenting this Egret's successful hunt for food.
Wow! What a great series. I did have a moment of compassion for the fish in that one shot, just before the egret positioned him for a quick swallow. I think he was pleading with the photographer to get him out of this mess.
That's what makes you such a fine photographer.. you have great instincts. Wonderful series of a beautiful bird.
dem burds are indeed purdy
hi Gail! Don't ya wish those birds would at least chew their food? hahahahha
Oh, don't worry about the jeggings not fitting. They are stretchy for a reason. hahahaha
Love to you, my friend! Love to you.
Lovely serie!
What a neat series of photos, Gail! Bravo!!
That was a wise choice to pull over. These shots are amazing.
These are amazing! They're a treat for me. I don't think I've ever seen a snowy egret in person. Thank you for the close up view! :-)
What a great series of shots!
Wonderful photos. I am envious. The migration must be spectacular. Dianne
RSVP? LOL that's a new one for me. Your photos are wonderful..he probably was showing off just a bit to his buds.
Oh my gosh Gail...you pulled off at a wonderful moment....fantastic pictures, the best action photos of an egret I think I've ever seen.. Love the "congregation" ...my mom used to have a book of collective animal nouns .. I have been trying to find a copy of it for years. Thanks for these, I didn't know any of them.
Great series, but now I'm hungry for fried fish!
Snowies are so beautiful and your images do this one justice.
Hmmm, come to think of it, Sunday's congregation DID resemble a bunch of Snowy Egrets! :)
Fantastic! I love it when they make a catch! These are beautiful!
Great action scene!~ I thought at first your egret had mismatched socks. That's an interesting leg coloring.
Gail, Wow, these shots are absolutely stunning! Over the years I've managed some decent shots out of the car window!
Wow - gorgeous gorgeous!
Gorgeous series of the egret with his fish!
More National Geographic images, Gail! Simply fabulous. (If you visit my crafting blog, you'll see two cards I made with snowy egret images.)
Most awesome picture of him with his "catch"!! That's a fairly large fish - stuck in his throat??? Bet he won't be hungry for a couple of days!!
What a catch of his catch!!
Beautiful bird! Love the series.
