Prayers

Prayer of St. Ignatius

Lord, teach me to be generous,
To serve You as You deserve,
To give and not count the cost,
To fight and not to heed the wounds,
To toil and not to seek for rest,
To labor and ask for no reward,
Save that of knowing I do Your holy will.

THE CONVICTING SPIRIT
(from The Valley of Vision: A collection of Puritan prayers and Devotions)

Thou blessed spirit, author of all grace and comfort,
Come, work repentance in my soul;
Represent sin to me in its odious colours that I may hate it;
Melt my heart by the majesty and mercy of God;
Show me my ruined self and the help there is in him;
Teach me to behold my creator,
                                his ability to save,
                                his arms outstretched,
                                his heart big for me.

May I confide in his power and love,
     commit my soul to him without reserve,
     bear his image, observe his laws, pursue his service,
     and be through time and eternity
          a monument to the efficacy of his grace,
          a trophy of his victory.

Make me willing to be saved in his way,
     perceiving nothing in myself, but all in Jesus:
Help me not only to receive him but
          to walk in him,
          depend upon him,
          commune with him,
          be conformed to him,
          follow him,
               imperfect, but still pressing forward,
               not complaining of labour, but valuing rest,
               not murmuring under trials, but thankful for my state.

Give me that faith which is the means of salvation,
          and the principle and medium of all godliness;
May I be saved by grace through faith,
          live by faith,
          feel the joy of faith,
          do the work of faith.

Perceiving nothing in myself, may I find in Christ
          wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, redemption.

PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen.

LITANY OF HUMILITY

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed,

Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being loved...
From the desire of being extolled ...
From the desire of being honored ...
From the desire of being praised ...
From the desire of being preferred to others...
From the desire of being consulted ...
From the desire of being approved ...
From the fear of being humiliated ...
From the fear of being despised...
From the fear of suffering rebukes ...
From the fear of being calumniated ...
From the fear of being forgotten ...
From the fear of being ridiculed ...
From the fear of being wronged ...
From the fear of being suspected ...

That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be esteemed more than I ...
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease ...
That others may be chosen and I set aside ...
That others may be praised and I unnoticed ...
That others may be preferred to me in everything...
That others may become holier than I,
 provided that I may become as holy as I should…

MORNING OFFERING

Most Holy and Adorable Trinity, one God in three Persons, I firmly believe that You are here present;
I adore You with the most profound humility; I praise You and give You thanks with all my heart for the favors You have bestowed on me. Your Goodness has brought me safely to the beginning of this day. Behold, O Lord, I offer You my whole being and in particular all my thoughts, words and actions, together with such crosses and contradictions as I may meet with in the course of this day.
Give them, O Lord, Your blessing; may Your divine Love animate them and may they tend to the greater honor and glory of Your Sovereign Majesty. Amen.
