Birthday Paddle

The month of May is crazy for the Dixon household. Double D's birthday falls during the first week of May; mine is the next week; and Mother's Day comes somewhere before, after, or ON my birthday. While Double D wanted to kick up his heels in The Quarter for his big day, I was perfectly content to paddle on Lake Martin for my birthday. The highlights for me were the Black-crowned Night Heron and Barn Swallows.

Before kayaking, however, I had to have some nutrition! My grandparents' used to love Pat's Fisherman's Wharf in Henderson, LA. Thankfully, it was on the way to the lake. I had not been there since I was a child, and I'm happy to report that it hasn't changed a bit. The food was as wonderful as I remembered. We got there way past lunch time, so that's why there aren't a lot of people. Just the way I like it.
You can see from my expanding mid-section that I ate every single bite of my shrimp platter.
I was then presented with this delicious, SINFUL slice of doberge cake and serenaded by our waitress.
We pronounce the cake DOUGH-bahj. Some say DOUGH-bearj.
Here is a more thorough history and a recipe of the famous cake.

I made fast friends with Emilean, our waitress. We Facebooked each other right then and there!
She made my day extra special. Not only did she give me extra shrimp AND a piece of cake,
she shared a personal experience that helped me tremendously concerning panic attacks.
It was one of those God-things, y'all.
Now, on to the show!
Water Hyacinth

Double D paving the way.

I learned that when gators are resting with their mouths open, they are cooling off since they
don't have sweat glands. Whew, good to know!

Black-crowned Night Heron

DD was after the Prothonotary Warbler and the Northern Parula

Prothonotary Warbler
So, that was my big day!

I like your way of celebrating. How are the insects in a Louisiana swamp? I would think they'd be rapacious. How do you manage?

Happy Belated birthday, Gail! Sounds like you had a wonderful lunch, cake and funday kayaking. I love the flowers, gator, heron and the beautiful warbler. Awesome shots. Happy Monday, have a great week ahead!

I didn't know that fact on a 'gator's mouth opened but I assumed that since so many animals don't have sweat glands. The cake looks scrumptious, and your new found friend, the waitress, is a god send by what you shared with us.

The flowers, the swamp trip, the birds...all stunning!!!
And, a belated happy birthday, tho a month late.

Thanks for sharing the link this week at I'd Rather B Birdin'

Happy belated birthday wishes!
It truly looks as if you had a wonderful day, cake included! :-)
The information in the link confirmed my hunch, the cake's called Dobostorte around here.

Happiness and joy, always in your posts, you look great!I planned to kayak this year, it's on the summer bucket list....I missed the very small window of cool weather and once agin it is too hot. I shall enjoy it vicariously through you and be sure to make it happen this fall!!

I saw that heron once, right here in my hometown and got some amazing pictures. Funny what excites us in this stage of our lives!!

Sounds like you had a perfect birthday! I have never seen an alligator in person but it's good to know that if it's mouth is wide open it's probably just trying to cool off. ;))

Happy birthday! Looks like a completely awesome way to spend the day! So great that you were able to meet the wonderful waitress, and I love your photos from the swamp...it's such a beautiful place, but I'm not sure I could get used to the alligators!

Gail, I can’t imagine sitting in that kayak… Among those trees and so low above the level of the water… I guess it feels somewhat special. Your birthday experience sounds wonderful, you must have enjoyed the day. Interesting captures and I love that candle in your cake, it looks sweet. :)

The blob is great to see, and you have this therefore nicely put in the picture. Also gefelciteerd with you both birthdays :-) I actually saw a crocodile, and this we only see in a zoo. The Prothonotary Warbler is a beautiful bird to see. A beautiful and cheerful post.

Joke (Joke's Camera) said...

The Warbler is gorgeous, Gail. All your pictures are fantastic and nice to see how you celebrated your birthday. I studied the recipy of the cake. That looks really yummie. But a lot of work, I suppose. I go for the lemon variety. Maybe I will try to make this one sometime. I already cooked Cajun food, so why not try this cake. So much to do and so little time ...... (sigh). Greetings, Joke

It sure was a big day. Happy Birthday for that day. The kayaking looked like it would be fun until I saw the gator. Great bird shots too.

Belated wishes all around, Gail, on both your Birthday and Father's Day. Getting to a restaurant later and not finding it crowded is always good, cause the service is better too as yours turned out and you also made a new friend! Thanks for the photos of yourself & the birthday cake, gotta have some kf that on a soecial day...and for energy, right. The kayak paddling looked like fun, but it's not for me. I was wondering about the gators and then you showed one...Yikes! Beautiful heron and warbler shots, as always😉
