The Lodge and an Oopsie!

Our time at Hickory Hills Hunting Preserve was absolutely glorious. Our stay was very pleasant. The lodge owners prepared three meals a day and their son took us around to three different ponds on their 12,000 acre estate. I did learn something that made me feel better about this type of hunting: each hunter is accompanied by one of the family members. Deer under a certain age or size are not allowed to be killed, so they all live longer lives at Hickory Hills than they would in the wild. They are well taken care of with plenty of acreage to make the hunt a challenge.
This was my favorite photo. This is Chief. He's an 11-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback.
He insisted on accompanying me while I ate and got a big slurp of my soup!

The lodge was decked out like Cabella's. All of the animals had been hunted by the owners
at different places around the world.

This was the view off the large, covered patio.

Dining area where Chief licked my soup, that corner table to the left.

An entrance gate to one of the properties named after a daughter, Linden.

Our fishing hole. I caught five bass and Daddy caught two. We threw them back because they were too small.

The lodge.
The biggest excitement took place after we left Hickory Hills. My dad was poking along I-55 in the left lane when suddenly a gigantic SUV came out of nowhere, right on our bumper. My dad moved over as soon as he could, but then he became really angry about it. So he flipped off the SUV making a mean face and shaking that middle finger violently at the driver. I swear; I do not lie. This is what my dad does. Next thing we know, blue lights and sirens come on. It was a Mississippi STATE TROOPER! Daddy pulled over and after rolling his window down, got the dressing down of his life. The only thing I could say in our defense was that the sudden appearance of the SUV scared me. The trooper was shouting at my dad like a drill sergeant, telling him to keep his butt out of the left lane, how dare he treat a fellow officer that way, blah blah blah. Mr. Trooper Man said he had a call to go to and had bigger fish to fry. Before that he threatened to throw my dad in jail. I had visions of how in Hades I would negotiate with these backwoods cops. Oh, Lawdy, my heart was beating 90-to-nothing. It's always an adventure with my dad. I have so many stories to share. But I'd have to have an R-rated blog to tell the whole truth.

Well, y'all have a great week! I'm doing laundry today and catching up on my blog reading.

Cops can be darn scary! This is one beautiful lodge. The perfect plact to spend time with family! Love that dog! I would have given him a slurp of my soup, too.

I have to admit...slow drivers in the left lane drive me insane too.

But I'm glad you had a nice visit at the reserve :)

Sounds like the trooper was being overly aggressive. Some of them are like that. Most of them are not, thankfully.

Love the shot of Chief. The lodge sounds so neat.

Oh my lord....I was about to say what a beautiful place you stayed during your time with your father...the scenery, the neat dog, the lodge...but then read about the Highway Patrol....

Good lord. My heart would be beating rapidly also. Scary. Yet, a bit exhilarating too. [after the fact and safe at home again.]

What gorgeous place, and I love Chief!

Regarding your encounter on the road, it seems as if all your dad's guilty of is using bad nonverbal language, not recklessly driving.

I had a similar experience a few years ago. A state trooper was RIGHT on my tail and going fast. I called the state police headquarters to tell them how frightened I was. Apparently a car similar to mine had been involved in a crime and he was checking my plates. I felt he could have caused me to have an accident. I tried to remember they have a tough job to do, but I would have been happier if he pulled me over. Your story was so nerve wracking I almost forgot to comment on the beautiful place you stayed. Gorgeous lodge and congrats for catching five bass even if you did have to release them. Sounds like you and your dad had a bit more excitement than expected. OOPS!

Oh my. . . oh my. . . That's all I can! Wow, what an experience!

The lodge looks like a beautiful place to visit and like it would be a nice place to relax and enjoy some quiet time.

Hugs to you!

Oh my gosh, this place looks great and is something I would totally go to as well. Now for your dad, my father was always getting in trouble with someone, my dad just changed from a polite gentleman to a wild man when someone drove him bonkers on the road. But that officer, a bit extreme I would say and if he had bigger fish to fry what the heck was he doing stopping to blow off to your father! Wow, I'd say that guy was on the edge! Yikes, and he carries a gun!

Love that sweet photo of Chief! What a beautiful place, thank you for sharing, Gail! I do think the cop was out of line, but really, Gail, your dad should be more careful. It could have been much worse. There are people out there who wouldn't think twice about pulling a gun on someone who gives them a dirty look - we've had people throw stuff at our car before. Glad all ended well. Blessings!

Wow, isn't Chief the handsome guy! Sounds a bit sneaky as well, getting into your soup like that! It's a beautiful estate, and looks like a great place to fish and relax.

Sounds like Mr. Trooper needs some Valium... and soon!

Gorgeous photographs of an unique place, Gail. And like many others I like the photo of Chiefs most - my (female) hairdresser Maria has a Rhodesian Ridgeback in her beauty salon as well!!! ;-)

All the best from Germany,
Uwe.

What a doozy of an ending to this post, angry trooper at your car door. The hunting lodge looks like a wonderful retreat place.

Oh wow, what a lodge, oh wow, what a story! I know I shouldn't have but I laughed about your Dad. The Trooper I guess didn't see the funny side though ;) With all the stories going around lately that's obviously not the funny side, that's the scary side but I know they have a tough job. Still, picturing your Dad, I had a good chuckle. My Dad was a British police officer for 30 years and I remember him going around all the big burly DC police officers and asked to get a photo taken with them so he could show his mates back home, which made me die with embarrassment because he'd even shout up to the guys on the horse and yell as if they were too high up to hear him. That memory always makes me smile now.

The photo of Chief, what a great shot. And I laughed again about the soup, sorry if I wasn't supposed to but I had a dog, I know how it goes.

You can't take Daddy anywhere, can you! haha Sounds like a delightful visit at the lodge. Chief had your number; bet you were wearing your dog lover aura.

Your dad sounds either very entertaining or quite a handful depending on how you want to look at it on any particular day!

A beautiful lodge. I am glad you were fishing though and not hunting, but that's my personal hangup, feelinga not shared even by the other person who lives in this house ;>)!

I guess you're just going to have to write a book about some of his adventures.

Quite the lodge and the tale of your dad. You do have great adventures.

OMG....I have to laugh just a little at your DAD story! I can so relate to these kinds of things...this would so be my dad before Alzheimer's. {Alzheimer's has changed him} I would love to have had a camera on your face!
I so love the picture of Chief!! Can't wait to hear more about your trip...

Omigosh Gail! Was it kind of quiet in the car after the trooper left? :)
I bet you DO have many other stories to tell about your dad.

These are beautiful pictures of the lodge, and what a lovely dog.

What a gorgeous place! And what an adventure with your dad. I'm glad he didn't end up on jail. I'm afraid if it had been me, I would have! It drives me crazy when police drive that way.

fyi....keep bail money in the glove box, that's what we do ;)

A terrifying encounter wit an unnecessarily rude copper. Whites as well as blacks are mishandled by many of these guys. The tales I could tell.

Otherwise a nice jaunt. Love the dog, and the daughter Linden was probably named for the tree. Lindens are native to the south.

Wonderful lodge experience. Sorry you didn't catch anything bigger. I loved the Rhodesian...we used to have a female named Penny and she was the BEST dog! She also could sneak a sandwich off a plate on the table like a ghost. :-) That SUV must have been very "incognito" to make you all think it was just a regular car. That was so scary having the other cop yell at your Dad...they should have realized the humor in the situation!

You sure had an adventure both at the lodge and on the road. (I was always told to only use the left lane to pass and to use the right lane to travel slower.) I really laughed anyway and you tell it so well! Your Dad is a hoot! The trooper a jerk, all blow no go... (in my book).

LOL.. some people's parents! ;)

Looks like a lovely spot and thankfully that's the only place your dad had to stay overnight. :)

Thank goodness that nasty trooper had other fish to fry!!
