Happy Green Day!

Top of the morning to you on this fine St. Patrick's Day!

It's amazing how a sunny, productive day restores the soul. We had a great time birding Saturday morning. The early hours no longer have Double D and me grumbling; we now look forward to what we will see. The day started out a little drizzly, but it was a good hike and lots of great conversations with new friends.

A big hearty breakfast afterwards and I was ready to tackle the yard. I had pulled up the knock-out roses under the kitchen window last week. Those had to be the thorniest rose bushes EVER. In its place I put encore azaleas called Autumn Carnation, and on each end planted a bottle brush plant to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. In the back garden I planted another bottle brush, dahlias, gerbera daisies and lantana. For the front yard we bought a japanese magnolia tree. Thankfully, I think (pray) the harsh winter is behind us.

Is this a chipping sparrow? I'm pretty sure, but sparrows are always a challenge to identify.

That means they are almost ready to leave us. Sad face.
Happy to be working for my former boss this week, and some days here and there until the first week of April. He has been gracious enough to let me flex my hours to check on the barred owlets at Bluebonnet Swamp. They are scheduled to hatch this week! I will try to keep my blogging updated, but as before, it may be a bit sporadic.

Butter Butts

A dear blogging friend told me about the nickname "Butter Butt" for the yellow-rumped warbler and now I can't refer to them any other way. I passed this knowledge on to my husband and he continually gets it wrong, saying 'butter balls' or 'yellow butts.' I no longer correct him; I know what he means.

Nurturing Nature

Since Tuesday was supposed to be the last of our sunshine for a while, I found myself back at Bluebonnet Swamp hoping to spot the Eastern Towhee I had seen last week. No such luck, but I met a very nice fellow blogger visiting all the way from the UK. Steve, I enjoyed your delightful accent and showing you around the swamp introducing you to our native wildlife. Hope you will visit our wonderful state again sometime!
An abundance of lizards were out in force.

Steve helped me spot this little fella.

When I returned home the sun was still very bright, so off to the backyard I went where I was dazzled even more!
Look who came to visit my neighbors' Chinese Tallow tree: the Cedar Waxwings!

If only I could get their back wings - the color and spots of red are exquisite.

Some type of sparrow resting on the palm tree.

Meet my new friend

Introducing: the Yellow-rumped Warbler!! Once I figured out what type of bird this was, I played their song on my iphone to lure them out. Thankfully, they are very gullible. There are two types of Yellow-rumped Warblers: Myrtle and Audubon. These are Myrtles due to the white patch on the throat; Audubons have a yellow patch on the throat. There are several nouns for a group of warblers: "bouquet" (my favorite), "confusion", "fall", and "wrench".

Bertha* and I are still at odds, though I no longer loathe her. Not loving her, but hopefully we will be friends soon. The first three shots were taken hand-held. Maybe Bertha likes to be held. Just what I need, a diva camera.
