An Unusual Visitor

Each morning, Double D opens all the plantation shutters in the house to let the light in. On the morning of October 16, he opened the blinds facing the street and became all tongue-tied as he tried to alert me that we had a unique visitor in our front yard. I ran to the window and this is what I saw strutting around.
Across our yard he marched as though on a mission.

Hmmm....this patch of landscaping might yield a suitable snack....

Bingo! A green anole is a good start.

Down the hatch!

On to the next neighbor.

The poor anoles and other critters are innocently going about their morning
and suddenly a big yellow beak ruins their lives.
We see great egrets by water all the time; along ditches, creeks, rivers, etc. I've never seen one land in our neighborhood and go foraging in the bushes.

On an unrelated note: adios, iGoogle! I will miss you, but I won't miss the daily warning message that you'll be shutting the doors. I guess now I'll use the Chrome apps page or have 62 tabs open all the time. Sigh.

Weekly Top Shot #107

Thank you, Madge!

Oh my goodness what a treat right in your yard. and ...your yard is so lush! Wow, gorgeous. Great post, Gail!

and yup I have lost 15 lbs since mid June. I stopped eating junk (candy etc and processed crud) and I drink about 32 oz of water daily. Thank you for noticing!

Thanks for noticing my fun camo flats, too. They are the best shoes for just skipping around town.

I'm torn...between experiencing this beautiful white egret and seeing a darling little anole being gobbled up! I would love to live where anoles inhabited the foliage around the house. Wonderful photos, though!

Great pics. How cool that he came to visit you and challenge your early morning photography skills. You rose to the occasion well.

As for iGoogle... you made me laugh. I've been using igHome for the past couple of weeks. It mimics iGoogle (even the name) quite well. It also gives you ready made links like YouTube and Gmail, and most importantly - Feedly. So far so good.

When strange visitors appear out of the blue I think there is more to it than coincidence.

Elegant and beautiful!

What an awesome surprise! I'm glad Double D spotted him!

I'm certainly envious of your visitor. I would have been trying to grab a quick shot because I would be sure he was going to fly away. You on the other hand kept your wits and captured some wonderful images!! Sorry for the poor little anole but that's how nature works and you got a fantastic shot.

Whilst we have three species of Egret in UK (one of which has become relatively common whilst the other two are relatively rare) seeing one in my yard would be the highlight of my year!! You captured this absolutely beautifully, Gail !!!

Amazing...what a treat.

We only get sparrows and doves in our yard most days.

Excellent series of the egret dining in the neighborhood too Gail.

Beautiful bird, and how great to live somewhere where green anole live wild. We had one as a pet until last winter, and were so fond of him.

Google is so weired, they just won't leave well enough alone. I used to love my IGoogle Page, but gave it up as soon as they said it was going away. I really missed my Google REader for a while, but have learned to love Feedly.

I guess that pretty egret wanted to get off the beaten track ... where there wasn't so much competition for the food maybe? He's very comfortable in your front yard.

Hello again!
Thanks for your visit and comment on my blog. I am in north Mississippi - about 250 miles north of Pearl River. Don't know how long it will take for the leaf color changes to reach the Gulf Coast area. We are at 39F this morning, and the leaf colors look hot enough to warm your hands on!
Have a beautiful day!

Love that first shot of your great egret!!! Looks like he's doing a dance for you - all he needs is a top hat and cane under his wing!! Bet you'll see more of him after he realizes all thse lizards he can find in your yard. Wonder how it feels down in his stomach trying to crawl out??? Great shots!!

You captured the great white stalker's actions perfectly Gail.

Starla said...

You know, I think the egret might be the giraffe of it's species. It has long legs, long neck and if you think about it, is captivating in a gangly sort of way!!

Brian King said...

That's just darn cool! It's a good day when you can take photos like that without even leaving your yard!
