Hummers of Magnolia
I don't know what my stepmom puts in her hummingbird nectar, but she has the largest population of hummingbirds I've ever seen. At one time I counted 17 hummers, but I think there are more. The buzzing is so loud, you'd swear there was a swarm of bees nearby. They're difficult little creatures to photograph, but I tried! Photographed 9/25 and 9/26 in Magnolia, MS.
I have never seen them get along so well. Usually one is a bully and tries to control access to the feeder, at least in my neck of the woods. Love your photos, Gail.

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful way to start the day. Love hummers. I've never seen so many at one time either. A couple of years ago, I hung out the DQ sign, but only got two consistent customers. Hmm, think your stepmom will share the secret recipe?

ReplyDeleteI too wonder how they get all those hummers to feed all at the same time. In my neck of the woods, they do not share, one owner till he loses and another one takes over. I know the noise, its awesome to stand and hold a feeder and feel the wind and hear the chirping they make as well as the wing noise.
She must have a secret recipe...Mine are gone on now, but I miss their whirring noises already.

ReplyDeleteFantastic. I know I can be a bit dramatic, but my heart leapt at these photos. Hummingbirds are my favorite and ours all left for the warmer climates at the end of September. We usually have a farm and feeders full of ruby throated from late April till mid September. Your shots are amazing !!

ReplyDeletePerfect captures, Gail. I'm sure she is on the migratory path. Count them by how much sugar water they eat. 1 oz feeds 5 a day. We were feeding more than 650 at the peak in mid-September but there were so many we couldn't count them. I haven't seen any this week but had some small ones late in October last year, so I'll keep up the feeder a few more weeks. Love catching up.
