Jefferson Island: The Ibises

When Double D and I explored Jefferson Island nearly two weekends ago we were treated to a very active colony of ibises, spoonbills, and egrets. That day I took 706 photos--way out of the norm for me. During the hour-and-a-half drive back home I managed to delete 90 images that were obviously poor quality. Over the last days I've whittled it down to less than 300. Still, more deletion is necessary. I don't need 100 different photos of the spoonbill babies. Or do I?

I wasn't sure how I was going to show you my afternoon there, so I have decided to pick a handful or so of each bird species, and do it that way. These are the white ibises. The light and shadows were a challenge, but I'm overall happy with the set. Hope you enjoy!

Frazzled

Our trip to Lake Martin last Saturday was so much fun. Although the nesting bird population has decreased there's still an abundance of little blue herons, some great egrets, a few nesting spoonbills, and a lone green heron.

Below was the interaction I caught between a little blue heron mother (blue/purple) and her demanding offspring (white). Poor mom.

MahMaaaaahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where ARE you????

Maybe he won't find me in this tree.
Uh oh. I hear him. Crikey, he spotted me.

(Mama flies to an adjacent tree with Junior in hot pursuit)

Mama!! Stop flying away from me. How dare you! I'm hungry!!!!!!!!

Junior, it's time to fend for yourself. I can't do it for you forever.

Feed me!!

Bird parenting is fascinating to observe. It exhausts me just watching them. They are devoted to their young, yet firm when it's time for the babes to leave the nest.

Idyllic

My dad and I planned a fishing day a couple weeks ago. Below was the location we cast in first; an idyllic pond owned by a friend of my dad's. All we managed to hook were two pitiful turtles. So sad to pull a hook out of a turtle's mouth. We then tried another area nearby and came up with a pair of bright orange, but very small perches, which we gave to the gentleman fishing next to us. We're still scouting out different places, but so far we haven't had much luck. All photos were taken with the iPhone.

Gettin' buggy wit it

Y'all, the humidity is unbearable. Suffocating, really. I can no longer waltz around with my camera gear willy nilly at any time of day. This time of year is why I never complain about cold weather. Ugh. How did my ancestors survive this jungle atmosphere without air conditioning? We are a spoiled generation.

These are random photos of bugs I've seen since the beginning of the year. My apologies in advance for any heebie geebies this may cause.

The evening of Jan 31, this strange wasp-like thing flew into my house
and landed on the living room lamp. I haven't seen one like it before or since.

Summertime Blues

The indigo bunting is a summer bird for Louisiana. On May 24th, I was thrilled to see one in the wild, no bird feeders in sight. This little guy was quite perturbed by my presence, flicking his tail, flapping his wings and giving me the stare-down. No, I wasn't playing his call on my phone, but once I realized he might be upset, I walked away. I'm sure he thought he won, but I felt like the winner. :)
