Rip's Rookery

Jefferson Island in New Iberia, LA is a beautiful place for birding, dining and boating. Outside the entrance is a large rookery with mostly Roseate Spoonbills, Cattle Egrets, White Ibises, and ALLIGATORS. The area is mowed to encourage hiking and photography around the rookery except for thick vegetation close to the water, home to insectivorous birds and nesting gators.

Walking along I suddenly heard a loud plunge which stopped me dead in my tracks. Gazing out over the water I spied a baby alligator. Oh no. Babies. That means mama is close. Using my tripod as a barrier I walked slowly and carefully noticing more and more babies in the water. What to do??? I needed to get closer to the Roseates...would I let this new discovery stop me? Double D finally caught up to me and after a brief discussion decided we would both walk the path to get nearer the roseates. I prayed out loud; I really did. I was truly spooked. We successfully birded the rookery without incident, thank God.

Here are just a few teasers. I have so many roseate spoonbill shots to share, it's unreal.
Baby gator or possibly an adolescent. Only his head was visible.

First time I've seen a roseate spoonbill sitting on the nest.

Cattle egrets

White Ibis

Cattle egret gathering sticks

One of several baby gators.

  4. I love that picture of the spoonbill sitting on a nest! These are fantastic shots. And the gator shot is amazing. You can definitely tell it's younger because of how smooth and non-scaly the skin looks!

  21. Seriously, Gail, you should be writing suspense novels, lol!!

These are amazing. The spoonbill on the nest and the egret gathering the sticks are my favorites, but these are all fabulous- nicely done!

  22. A wonderful set, Gail! I have been fascinated by spoonbills since seeing a picture as a child. I was desperate to see the Roseates when I visited the Everglades from the UK in August 2012, but was too early by a couple of weeks :-( I did see an Australian Spoonbill when I visited there in October 2013, so finally achieved my childhood ambition at the ager of 47!!!

All great shots, but the 1st and 3rd Roseates stand out along with the Cattle Egret with the stick and the baby 'Gator. I trust you were using the 100-400 L ;-)

  33. A 'gator is just a belt with teeth. You're usually okay as long as you don't actually pick up a baby. Just move slowly. (That applies to backing away from one, too, if you get too close.)

Wonderful photographs of the rookery, Gail! The Spoonie on the nest is fantastic!
