The Reds

Years and years ago when someone in my family was irate about something or someone, my grandmother would say, "He's got the reds." Is that a Louisiana thing? I've never heard it anywhere else, but I've only lived in two states, so I'm not an authority. Also, when I was a youngster, a 'sore throat' was called a 'red throat.' Anyone hear that one?

This post has nothing to do with me having the reds or a red throat; just wanted to display my pretty little back yard birds and I'm running out of ways to title my posts. :)

I guess this is more of a rosy-red. And I only WISH he was a back yard visitor. :)

  1. I have never seen a roseate in the tree like that, before!! Also, never heard of the two 'red' expressions. I've heard of having the Red a$$ before. Meaning: being really mad....but haven't heard that for eons.

  5. I haven't heard of 'He's got the reds' and I have lived in Illinois, Texas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Must be a Louisiana thing. Love all your reds, but was really happy to see the spoonbill.

  7. My grandmother always called our sore throat a RED throat. Haven't thought about that in years! These "red" birds are striking and just as pretty as can be. I know it sure makes for happy days when you can sit in your backyard and see such lovelies...
    Have a bright, sunshiny day!

  11. It makes sense since anger can be described as being red hot. There is also the phrase, "Seeing red."

  12. Never hear the "reds". I heard, "he's got a burr..." you know where! Your birds are so pretty. Wish I had the guts to brave the mice who would surely come up from the woods below for the seeds the birds would drop!

  13. The phrase in our family when someone was angry was "he's seeing red".

Beauty shots Gail! The woody is gorgeous!

  14. Must be a Louisiana thing, or at least not a "my part of Texas" thing. But I like it! Love your mouthful shots. Great focus and detail!

  15. I really miss cardinals. Why can't they come to Oregon and visit once in awhile? I would gladly share sunflower seeds with them.

  16. Like Kerry, I'm missing the cardinals also. We haven't seen any up at our new digs yet. Lovely shots. I love the little feathery wisp blowing in the wind.

  17. Haven't heard of "the reds," but I love your reds! Is the spoonbill color affected by its diet, as flamingos are? I really like your cardinal and woodpecker images--amazing detail.

  19. ...thanks for linking up this wonderful post of your reds at the Bird D'Pot!!

Bud and I just returned from a birding trip, and ended up seeing a huge owl! I'm still in awe. It wasn't red tho, but I was red with excitement...the blood rushed through my veins as I shook trying to get a good picture of it before it flew away.

  26. Beautiful! The woodpecker is my favorite! When I was in high school there was a saying that was popular if someone was being difficult or they weren't nice - people would say, "Man, that's red!" or "Why are you being so red?" LOL! Seems stupid now.

  34. If you get a roseate spoonbill in your backyard, I am coming to live with you ;>)! Loving your red birds. Have never heard the word 'red' used in exactly that way, but people do say "he was seeing red' or I was seeing red when they get really angry. So I guess it's sort of the same thing.
