Lake Des Allemands

Friday, July 25, 2014 at my cousin's camp. Fun times.
There are several of these jetties around the campsites. Each year
erosion from hurricanes and other storms whittle away the land.
They have tried to protect them by reinforcing the borders.

Oops...'scuse me!

Some type of algae maybe?
Eggs from the Apple Snail.
Thanks, Wally!!!!

All along the banks are piers with each one hosting its own little garden.

Close up of the cypress knees.
I hope you enjoyed your trip around the bayou. There are more photos, but I don't know when I'll get around to posting them.

Chance Update:
Chance is back home after being hospitalized for possible Vestibular Disease. His progress is slow, but we're hoping for continued improvement in the coming days and weeks. The doctor explained that he will have a permanent head tilt which we can accept. However, he is not the same happy dog following me from room to room. He sleeps most of the time because I suspect it's too stressful for him to get around. Even trying to stand up from a lying position is difficult and he becomes very shaky. Yesterday he tried to turn around too quickly and fell completely over. Scared him AND me to death! But he has begun to eat and drink a little, which is encouraging.

Due to my limited time with Chance and working from home next week, I will be taking a short blog break. Probably just a week, maybe a little longer. Thank you as always for your kind comments and visits. It is truly appreciated! I'll miss you guys, but will see y'all soon!!!

  4. The little pink globes on the stump are probably eggs of some kind. So sorry your pet is ill and wish you and him the best with his problem. Your photos are special today. Love the lovers.

  5. Lakes Des Allemands??? The lake of the Germans? Der See der Deutschen??? ;-)

So: my lake! Or: at least a part of the lake is mine... ;-)

Never heard about this part of my property!

I just checked its location on Google Maps - ok - it's in Louisiana, close to New Orleans. Maybe there were some German settlers 200 years ago who took up residence near this lake. Or do you have any idea where the name comes from?
    Have a great weekend,
    UWe.

  7. Chance stands a good chance to stay very healthy.

    Take care.

  8. I do love your Bayou photos. They make me anxious for our first snowbird month on the Gulf in Florida where I rented a cottage. And hoping Chance recovers soon...:)

I am glad Chance is home, and I hope he continues to improve and finds himself content to just be with you again.

  18. Oh sweet Chance! He must be happy to be home, and getting lots of extra loving.

    Beautiful pictures!

  19. So glad Chance is home, even if you're both adapting to what that means. That pink stuff looks like eggs - I wonder whose?! Love those pier gardens! It would be fun leave a little gnome or fairy behind for the next person to find, lol :) I seriously don't know what I'll do next week, Gail, without your beauty to brighten my lunch hour :) I'll be thinking of you, and praying that the break benefits both you and Chance.

  20. Wow you never cease to amaze with such fabulous photos. Loved those Cypress tree. The pink things look like some kind of eggs, very interesting.
Do take care of your sweet Charlie. I hope he improves.

  21. As always, your photographic "tours" are fascinating, Gail. Like many others, I think those are eggs of some kind, but what in the world? If they were under water, they might look more normal. Strange! Glad your Chance is improving somewhat.

  22. Terrific photographs, Gail!

    Looks like home (central Florida).
Your pink masses are eggs from an invasive Apple Snail. I think Louisiana started seeing them 4-5 years ago and there is a concern they might adversely affect rice crops.

    Love those cypress knees!

    All our best for Chance.

    Take care!

  23. I think your algae may be some kind of eggs...fish eggs?

'Tis good to hear that Chance is back home. I'm sure his 'weakness' of standing and getting up would be from the medications and IV's during his stay...which should improve over the days to come. Let's hope.

Take a good long time away from the stress of blogging and don't work or worry too much. We'll be here when you return.

  28. Sending good thoughts for sweet Chance. Obviouslsy, I'm catching up after falling behind while traveling. How I hope he will be OK.

Your cousin's "camp" looks lovely and oh so much fun. Erosion sure is a problem in your State though isn't it? (Maybe every coastal state, but it shows up quicker in your low-lying one).

Take care of your dog and yourself; we will be thinking of you

  33. I know this must be difficult watching your precious Chance be so ill. Glad to hear that he is better, but I know you would love for him to bounce back to his usual personality. Hoping the Best for him. These are some awesome photos. The eggs look like grapes that are trying to ripen...So much to video at the bayou. Enjoy your break

  37. Oh, my baby dog died from filaria about 35 years ago. I blamed myself at that time as I have no knowledge about it. I DO hope Chance will get well SOON!

I enjoyed your awesome pictures as usual; scenery around the bayou is gorgeous♪

  38. Well, I'll be thinking about you and Chance, hoping he learns to get around with his new disability. I know this must be difficult for you, Gail.

I LOVE these photos of the bayou, which I have never seen first hand but have read about in books.

  39. Well, I say the same thing each time...your photos are beautiful. When we were kayaking in the everglades, the guide destroyed the apple snail eggs...possibly invasive? I too thought they were some sort of fungus. I hope your pup can adapt to his disability. Such wonderful companions!

  40. gorgeous images today!!! they look like "belly" views but i must assume you were in your kayak ;)

enjoy this special time with chance....you can give him extra time, care, support and love while he needs it most!!!

  52. Ok, I was wondering where you were. I am back and you are not, but I do sincerely understand.

I finally took your nail polish off. I wore it for about two months solid, just removed it and applied it again, week after week. I still love it. I swear it is one of my most favorite polishes of all time, I am serious!

Have a great break! I'll be watching for you. chemo has not gotten me this time. yay!

  54. I'm so sorry about Chance, and hope he'll continue to improved!

The cypress knees take me way, way back to childhood and being out in a boat & afraid to look as it would seem to me we'd be too close. Also, there's a little town in W FL Cypress. :)

    Take care!

  55. Thank you Gail for the update on Chance!! Thoughts and prayers!!
Enjoyed the tour of your Bayou!! Your cypress trees are amazing and the one with all the cypress knees - they amaze me.
Your snail eggs brought back memories from being a St. Johns River Rat in central Fla. I like your pink eggs - our's were white - probably a different kind of snail!!

  56. Incredible photos as usual! I really enjoyed the model train pics. I think you captured the scenes perfectly!
Hoping your pooch is starting to feel better!!

  61. Poor Chance. I hope he is able to feel better over time. Hugs to you.

Lovely pics. I had to look it up and then saw that others knew they were apple snail eggs. How cool is that!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks for tour. I wonder if that species of the apple snail is the invasive species introduced through the acquarium trade.?
