His eye is on the sparrow

The white-throated sparrow is a wintering bird for Louisiana. I saw this one at my favorite nature center the first week of January. They prefer to feed on the ground at the edge of forests or brushy areas. Some birders describe their call as "Poor Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody." Although they look nothing alike and aren't particularly related, the white-throated sparrow and the dark-eyed junco will sometimes mate and produce hybrids. More cool facts about this bird may be found here. Collective nouns for sparrows are: crew, flutter, quarrel, meinie, and ubiquity of sparrows.

When Jesus is my portion
A constant friend is he
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches over me
His Eye Is On The Sparrow hymn. Lyrics written in 1905 by Civilla D. Martin.

Song history by Civilla Martin:
"Early in the spring of 1905, my husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York. We contracted a deep friendship for a couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle—true saints of God. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nigh twenty years. Her husband was an incurable cripple who had to propel himself to and from his business in a wheel chair. Despite their afflictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. One day while we were visiting with the Doolittles, my husband commented on their bright hopefulness and asked them for the secret of it. Mrs. Doolittle's reply was simple: "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." The beauty of this simple expression of boundless faith gripped the hearts and fired the imagination of Dr. Martin and me. The hymn "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" was the outcome of the experience."

Ref: Matthew 6:26 and Matthew 10:29-31

An ubiquity of sparrows...I'm quite taken by that Gail, and I'm sure Dixie would approve as well. ;-)

  4. Your photos of the sparrow are absolutely beautiful. It surprises me to hear of the cross mating between two different species of birds. I think that's pretty rare in God's creation; and, generally, when cross breeding occurs, the offspring is sterile.

  19. Indeed, hie watches over the little sparrow. I don't know that I would be so cheerful about being bedridden, however. Thanks for the update on one of my favorites. They winter here also.
